Spring Cleaning? Give new life to all the old athletic shoes hanging around your closet!
ROC Multisport is collecting used sneaker donations for Fundación Siempre Mas, an organization in the Dominican Republic whose mission is to motivate youth from communities in need to contribute to positive development and appreciate the environment
As result of your sneaker donations, hundreds of Dominican students from low-income communities will be able to hike the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, “Pico Duarte” (Duarte Peak). The adventure is exclusively for students who are identified as leaders in their communities, who would not even dream of having the opportunity to go on this journey, and much less have the gear to do so.
We often don’t realize how valuable that pair of sneakers that sits in the back of our closets for years can be. That pair of sneakers enable a Dominican teenager to have more self-confidence in achieving something he/she never thought possible. It allows for a greater awareness of the unforgiving, yet beautiful environment, and that we must do our part to care for it. It allows a teenager to interact with adult leaders- people who have seen a path to success and could guide youth in the same direction. And most importantly, it brings hope to the students’ community- sending the message that someone cares about them and there is opportunity to change and accomplish great feats in this lifetime.
The students are assigned the task of taking what they learned on the trip and going back to make an impact on their communities. So the trip is not just about making one teenagers’ year. It’s about making a ripple effect on the environment, public health and well-being of the entire Dominican Republic. And that ripple starts when your old sneakers are dropped in the hands of a young leader.
